Training on capacity building for livelihood activities held

Mokokchung, January 27 (MExN): The Forest and Biodiversity Management in the Himalaya, Nagaland Project (FBMP) Co-financed by Federal Republic of Germany through KfW (German Development Bank) is being implemented under Mokokchung Forest Division and under the Batch-2 village which includes Akhoya, Nukshiyim, Changtongya Old and Unger village.

The objectives of this Project includes promotion of sustainable and effective management of forest and biodiversity in the state of Nagaland, to support improved connectivity and conservation of Biodiversity, to create and enhance livelihood opportunities of dependent communities, and to put in place incentive mechanisms rewarding communities for effectively protecting and maintaining their Community Conserved Areas.

A Hands-on-Training session on “capacity building for livelihood activities” in L5 (Biodiversity Conservation Landscape) Villages was conducted on January 23 at the Changtongya Town Hall, Changtongya Town organised by FBMP, Mokokchung Division. The training involved participants from Akhoya, Nukshiyim, Changtongya Old and Unger village (Batch-2 village).

The programme was chaired by Tianenla Lemtur and invocation was delivered by Talimeren Ao, DMU.

In the keynote address, Alemwapang T Imchen, Deputy Conservator of Forest highlighted the aims and objectives of the training, He also urged all the participants to make the most of the training, emphasizing its potential to greatly benefit them in carrying out diverse livelihood activities in their respective localities.

I kumzuk, Tatar Changtongya Village, delivered a brief speech welcoming all the participants. He expressed gratitude to the Divisional Forest Officer, Mokokchung and FBMP for successfully implementing various projects in their village. He also highlighted the JICA project being implemented which has greatly benefited the community through Entry Point Activity and plantation initiatives carried out under different modules and encouraging the participants to work diligently in livelihood activities in their respective villages while contributing actively to the community.

This was followed by a technical session covering various topics such as Kharif crop pest management and different Agri. Farming Methodologies, Silk worm rearing & management, Bee- keeping and Livestock rearing & disease management.

Dr Martha Chakruno, ACTO (Plant Protection) KVK Mokokchung led the session by presenting the slides on the Punjab Cancer train emphasizing the causes of cancer linked to the excessive use of chemicals in farming. She also showcased various chemical products that should be avoided in agricultural practices, discussed pest management for kharif crops, and introduced different sustainable farming methodologies. She also introduced integrated pest management strategies through cultural, biological and chemical methods for pest control in cultivation area.

Nokzenkerba, Extension Officer, Sericulture, Mokokchung and Angukali Chophy, Extension Officer, Sericulture Mokokchung presented on successful Eri silkworm rearing, highlighting the types of plants essentials for feeding in order to achieve high-quality silk production.

The session on Livestock rearing and disease management was conducted by Dr Ketinaro, Veterinary Department, Mokokchung who covered various topics ranging from breed selection, pig care and management, feeding practices, disease prevention and healthcare, housing management, care and management of gilts and sows during pregnancy and farrowing. Additionally, she distributed free Veterinary medicines to the participants.

T Chubagangshi, Apiculturist (NBHM), a recent award winning for Best Beekeeper from North East under ST Category by Tribal affairs Ministry (TRIFED) on the occasion of the World Bee Day celebrations at Balaghat, Madhya Pradesh on 28th May 2023 was invited as the Resource Person for the technical session on Beekeeping. He shared his expertise and provided practical insights, enhancing the participants understanding of beekeeping techniques.

The event concluded with a closing remark and vote of thanks by Imemakok, Forester-1, followed by a communal lunch.
