Preserve culture and heritage: Sharingain

DIMAPUR , October 3: Kohima Ao Students Union (Ao Kaketshir Telongjem Kohima) students’ day-cum-general meeting was held on October 2 at Molu Ki, Kohima.

According to a DIPR report, while speaking on the occasion, speaker, Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA), Sharingain Longkumer said that the union was founded in 1960.



He said that the founders went through hardships to achieve the transformation and progression of the union in the last 60 years.

In this regard, he called on the students to aim higher and urged them to be good ambassadors for the Ao community.

Sharingain pointed out that Mokokchung district had the highest literacy in the state however, he stated that literacy did not translate as an educated since education was an ongoing process.

He advised the students by saying that “the main thing in life, is to keep the main thing, the main thing” and what they decided to choose as profession should be their decision and not what their parents wished.

The NLA speaker also encouraged the student to have bigger target to serve not only at state level but at national level. He also urged them to preserve one’s culture and heritage, and to being proud of one’s cultural identity.



Treasurer, Ao Kaketshir Telongjem Kohima, Wati. L. Imchen in his speech advised the students to give importance to cultural identity and encouraged them to undertake cultural tours where they could visit ancestral villages and place.

He also urged them to preserve wildlife and forest and restrain from hunting wild animals and birds.

Earlier, the programme was chaired by Kilangsungla Pongen, welcome address by AKTK president, Imodangba Imchen and vote of thanks was proposed by vice-president, Kumtenzukba Jamir. A short play on the importance of mother tongue was also showcased by Mongsenyimti Students Union Kohima.

The new office bearers (2021-2023) would be led by Akumyanger as president, Takusunep Imchen as vice president, Meyipong Kichu as general secretary along with two other members.

Earlier, Sharingain Longkumer presented certificates of merit to 11 students of HSLC and HSSLC who achieved top 20 positions in the examinations.
