PHED Nagaland officials equipped on Faecal Sludge Management

To equip the state and district officials of Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) Nagaland with essential knowledge and skills to develop and implement the Faecal Sludge Management (FSM) plans in a successful manner, a three-day training programme was held at the PHED Conference Hall Kohima from August 16 to 18.

This Capacity strengthening exercise was jointly organized by PHED Nagaland, UNICEF and PriMove Pune.

More than thirty officials comprising of Executive Engineers, Sub-Divisional Officers, Junior Engineers and State Consultants from PHED attended the programme.

The training was designed to foster a comprehensive understanding of FSM, encompassing its concepts, challenges and vital role it plays in maintaining sanitation and hygiene.

It aimed to simplify the intricate aspects of FSM and provide a holistic understanding of the entire process, thus equipping districts teams to design and execute FSM and sustainable sanitation service delivery plans tailored to their respective regions.

The topics covered during the sessions included; SBM-G Phase II guidelines, retrofitting of toilets under ODF sustainability initiative, FSM concepts and requirements, as well as Urban-Rural convergence.

Further, the participants delved into treatment technologies for faecal sludge, addressing unique challenges in hilly areas and gathered insights into setting up, operating and maintaining Faecal Sludge Treatment Plants (FSTPs), enhanced with the help of case studies and group works that was followed by presentations of the participants.

The final day of the training was dedicated to FSM planning and case studies, highlighting the significance of ensuring sustainable service delivery in FSM.

Moreover, an important session on sanitation workers’ safety and dignity underscored the commitment towards creating a safe and respectful working environment for those involved in the Faecal Sludge Management process. 

The three day programme culminated today with a valedictory function where Er Repangyangba Longkumer, Chief Engineer & HOD, PHED delivered the valedictory address.

Experience sharing was done by Er Khaoshai Lam, JE Tuensang, Er Nungshichila Longchar, JE Mokokchung and the team from PriMove, Pune.

A felicitation and awarding of certificates was also held which was then followed by vote of thanks by Er Ichirang Zeliang, Executive Engineer, Sanitation & WSSO, PHED.

The programme was chaired by Er Imkongjungla Jamir, JE, Sanitation & WSSO, PHED.
