Phangnon Konyak set to become Nagaland’s first woman MP in RS

BJP candidate S Phangnon Konyak, who filed her nomination on Monday, is all set to be elected unopposed for the Rajya Sabha seat from Nagaland. She is the only candidate in the fray as no other candidate filed nominations on the last day (Monday).

Konyak, who is the State Mahila Morcha President, will create history as the first woman to be elected to the Rajya Sabha from the state. She will also be the second Naga woman parliamentarian after Rano M Shaiza, who was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1977. According to an update from the Additional Secretary and Returning Officer to the biennial election to the Council of States Khruohituonuo Rio, Konyak’s nomination was found valid after the scrutiny of nomination papers were conducted on Tuesday. The last date for the withdrawal of papers is March 24, after which she would be declared elected.
