Proposes rigorous special drive against extortion Flags off 11 new Scorpios for SPs
Deputy chief minister Y Patton Monday said that the probe by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) into the December 4, 2021 Oting killings was almost complete.
Informing this at the flagging off programme of the newly purchased vehicles for superintendents of police (SPs) at Police Headquarters, Kohima, Patton said that DGP T John Longkumer had informed him that investigation was almost complete, except some documentation work. He assured that justice would be delivered in the incident.
Flagging off 11 new Mahindra Scorpios, Patton also informed that procurement of vehicles for the remaining newly upgraded districts was under process. Mobility and quick response to any situation being the primary functions of the police, he hoped that they would be able respond to any situation promptly with new vehicles being provided to the SPs.
He said that the overall law and order situation in the State was largely peaceful last year, barring the highly condemnable Oting incident. Further, proposing a rigorous special drive against extortion, Patton asked the police to curb the menace of extortion and take stringent actions against undergrounds (anti-social elements) on a war footing. He also stressed on increased vigil along the inter-State border.
Patton also commended the recent seizure of smuggled gold weighing approximately 48 kg and worth over Rs 23 crore by Nagaland Police.
Noting more seizure of drugs, Indian made foreign liquor and contraband made by police during the special drive “War on Drugs”, Patton said he was happy over the seizure of one lakh Yaba tablets by Dimapur Police worth approximately around Rs 5 crore in the market.
He hoped that under the able leadership of the DGP, such special drives would continue and the fight against drugs and other contraband would pick up pace for the well-being of the society and younger generation.
Patton also expressed satisfaction over the conduct of IRB personnel in the just-concluded Punjab Assembly elections and presently deployed in Manipur for poll duty. Patton said he was confident the IRB personnel would be ambassadors of Nagaland and perform their duties without fear or favour.
The deputy chief minister said the Police department had constituted a “DGP Commendation Disc” in September 2021, and officers and personnel with outstanding performance had been suitably awarded. He said this was a very good initiative and hoped that this would encourage the police to perform better in all aspects of policing.
He also assured the State government’s continued support to the Police department in ensuring law and order and better service delivery to the citizens.
“Discipline is the watch word in the Police Department and I am sure the department shall continue to function with renewed discipline, service and sacrifice in discharge its duties,” he added.
In his brief address, DGP, TJ Longkumer thanked the deputy chief minister for his constant support to the department. He also highlighted some of the achievements made possible under Patton’s leadership like NPS cadre review and creation of new SP rank officers for the new districts.
Asserting that though Nagaland police has taken on the role of peacekeepers, Longkumer cautioned that “anybody who disturbs the peace, and if any harm is done to policemen/women officers, jawans during their discharge of duties will be dealt strictly.”
