KOHIMA/DIMAPUR/KIPHIRE/MOKOKCHUNG/MON, OCT 12: Following the demise of Environment, Forest & Climate Change and Justice & Law minister CM Chang, Naga Students’ Federation and Eastern Naga Students’ Federation have temporarily called off their State-wide ‘indefinite bandh’ till October 18.
NSF president Ninoto Awomi and ENSF president Sepili L Sangtam in a joint statement stated that the two federations held a discussion and unanimously decided to keep the agitation in abeyance considering the sudden and untimely demise of the minister as a mark of respect for the departed leader. However, they said the agitation would resume on October 19.
In this regard, the student bodies also directed their federating units and sub-ordinate bodies to put in place all necessary preparations in order to ensure that the next phase of agitation is carried out successfully.
Meanwhile, the first day of the ban on movement of government registered vehicles by the two organisations passed off peacefully and volunteers followed all COVID-19 SOPs.
Altogether 37 vehicles violating the ban were seized by NSF and ENSF activists all over the State during the day. In the State Capital, the seized vehicles were kept at Naga Solidarity Park.
NSF and ENSF had earlier stated that the seized vehicles would be released only when their demand for mainstreaming Sarba Siksha Abhiyan and Rashtriya Madhyamik Siksha Abhiyan teachers of 2010 & 2013 batches into State education cadre was met. The statement claimed that the federating units and subordinate bodies of the two federations implemented the ban in letter and in spirit in their respective jurisdiction.
Extending their gratitude to the units for their continued support and cooperation in all the endeavours being undertaken by the two organisations and also to the Nagas for expressing solidarity with the cause, impacting a large section of the teaching community, NSF and ENSF also offered their deepest condolences to the bereaved family of Chang and assure their continued prayer support in the days to come.
Dimapur: In Dimapur, the protest was spearheaded by Dimapur Naga Students’ Union (DNSU) and volunteers from its 12 constituent units were placed at strategic locations of the city.
Around seven government registered vehicles were seized and taken to Tenyimi Complex, Khermahal.
DNSU president Sedevellie Angami said the union, along with Dimapur Eastern Naga Students’ Union, imposed the ban in Dimapur district as per the directive of NSF and ENSF.
He said they would await further directives from NSF and ENSF on how to go about with the seized vehicles, even as he claimed that necessary actions were initiated to make sure that all the seized vehicles were safe. He termed the protest as a strong message to the government and hoped that the demand would be met at the earliest.
Kiphire: Along with rest of the State, Kiphire too witnessed total restriction on movement of government registered vehicles. Volunteers of United Sangtam Students’ Conference (USSC) were deployed at important junctions to monitor the ban. No vehicle was seized on the first day. At Pungro, Yimchungrü Student Union (YAA) imposed the ban.
Mokokchung: The first day of the ban passed off peacefully in Mokokchung, where Ao Students’ Conference (AKM) oversaw its imposition.
Mon: In Mon district, the day passed off peacefully and the ban was imposed under the banner of Konyak Students’ Union in collaboration with its units.
Similar protests were held across various districts.
