DIMAPUR, JUL 8 (NPN): In response to All India Congress Committee’s call, Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) joined the 10-day-long protest that began on Wednesday against hike in prices of essential commodities and fuel.
On day-one of the protest, NPCC president K Therie initiated banner and poster campaign at Dimapur District Congress Committee office, while NPCC working president Khriedi Theunuo led the protest in Kohima.
According, a series of agitation programmes have been chalked for the next 10 days, even as the party requested the public to extend their cooperation, especially in its signature campaign.
Pointing out that fuel prices had been hiked 30 times in the last two months alone and that petrol price has breached Rs 100 per litre mark in more than 200 cities across the country, NPCC alleged that Narendra Modi government levied an excise duty of Rs 32.90 per litre on petrol and Rs 31.80 per litre on diesel. It said the government had earned over Rs 22 lakh crore in last seven years by imposing high excise duty on petrol and diesel.
The party said prices of edible oils too nearly doubled in last six months, while the prices of pulses had seen an unprecedented rise, adding every household item had seen a quantum jump in prices.
Moved by the plight of people already suffering on account of Covid-19 pandemic, rampant unemployment and job losses, Congress claimed that it launched the nationwide campaign demanding rollback in prices of petrol and diesel and check spiralling price increase of essential commodities that were going out of reach for common man.
