Dr PS Lorin, Principal Emeritus, and founder of Tetso College passed away on May 31 in Dimapur. He was one of the first among Nagas to be awarded a Fulbright Scholarship through the United States-India Educational Foundation.
Throughout his life, Dr Lorin played important roles in academic and cultural bodies in the state and served as member of the Executive Council, Nagaland University; Member of the Board of Studies, Patkai Christian College (Autonomous); Founding member and first Convenor of the Naga Peoples’ Movement for Human Rights; member of the High-Powered Committee on Higher Education of the Government of Nagaland; Executive Board Member of the North East Zone Cultural Centre; President of the Nagaland College Principals Association, and Member of the Forum for Naga Reconciliation (FNR).
In his elegy, Kvulo Lorin called his father an optimist and a fighter who led by example from his childhood days to his role of a father and even throughout his battle against cancer. He fondly recalled how his father would narrate his childhood memories. Describing Dr Lorin as a simple man, who never superseded his wants, but was rather sacrificial all the time, Kvulo Lorin said his father displayed a fighting spirit even though he had gone through so much pain and fought a long battle. “Last year, he fought COVID-19 and was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer,” he said, adding that his health had declined about a week ago, leading to his demise early Monday morning.
A park will be built in his father’s memory, Kvulo Lorin added.
Eulogies from the Rengma Baptist Church, Sovima; Tetso College; Phenshunyu Lowjvu, Dimapur; Fr CP Anto, Private College Association of Nagaland (PCAN), and neighbours in Unity Village were also read out during the funeral by Hyunilo Anilo Khing.
Dr Lorin was laid to rest after a funeral service which was live streamed through the Tetso College’s social media pages. He leaves behind his wife, children and grandchildren.
A pioneer in higher education
Paying homage to its founder, the Tetso College stated, “We have lost a pioneer in higher education among the Nagas, but our hope is the legacy he leaves behind. He was a resolute man of honour, and the College deeply acknowledges the positive impact that he created for all of us. He has truly lived up to our mission of empowering the many thousands of young people and leaders of Nagaland and beyond.”
Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio said, “He was not only a par-excellence educationist, but also a social activist, who had sincere concerns for the welfare of Naga society.” Dr Lorin was always humble, kind, selfless and a true gentleman, CM Rio said, adding that the Naga society has lost a fatherly figure, a mentor, guide and a true son of the soil.
“It would be befitting that we continue the legacy of public service that he left behind so that he will continue to live among us,” he added.
