Mon, August 7 (MExN): The “deplorable and pathetic” stretch of National Highway 702 between Namtola in Assam to Mon in Nagaland is a lifeline for the entire district of Mon, and its condition has only gone from bad to worse, according to the Tapi Area Students’ Union (TASU).
Dusty during the dry winter months and muddy during the monsoon, residents living nearby the road and passersby face difficulties all year round. “The condition has gone to such an extent that vehicles that ply on this road had to rush to the garage after it for repairing (sic),” the TASU stated in a press release on Friday.
It also pointed out that the poor road condition has endangered the lives of commuters, especially pregnant women and patients who are in critical condition.
Questioning the concerned authority for turning a blind eye to the only lifeline road for the entire district, it urged the concerned department and contractors to carry out maintenance work within a week. The Union stated that the stretch, particularly between Tuimei Village and Mon Village junction which falls under its jurisdiction, “has become deplorable and non pliable.”
“The union states that failing to do so may invite more aggression from the Union and vast section of public as it is the only lifeline for people of the Mon District,” it added.
It maintained that the N-M road (NH-702) has been in existing since the British era, yet the condition of the road has not been improved over the years. Contractors and workers that had been deployed over a year ago, yet the road condition has gone from bad to worse, it noted, while adding that ‘good road is the way for development of any societies.’
Meanwhile, it lauded the steps taken by the Tizit Area Students’ Union who had imposed the “chaka bandh” along N-M road (NH-702) earlier in July, to protest the failure to resume construction along the said road.
