Tribal affairs and higher education minister Temjen Imna Along has asserted that Nagas were not backward but deprived and, given an opportunity, they could prove themselves and Nagaland could be on a par with other States.
Speaking at an event organised by National Scheduled Tribes Finance and Development Corporation (NSTFDC) under the Union Ministry of Tribal Affairs to promote entrepreneurship among Scheduled Tribes (ST) of the Northeastat Hotel Japfu here on Thursday, he said Nagas had a huge potential for entrepreneurship and social engineering.
He claimed that Nagaland had a great scope vis-à-vis sustainable development, adding the State could supply the entire country with best quality organic food and urged the Central ministry to draw up plans accordingly to promote entrepreneurship.
Pointing out that many schemes feasible in metropolitan cities might not be applicable in Nagaland and other North-eastern States, Along urged the ministry to carry out research in Nagaland for successful implementation of the schemes.
He appealed to NSTFDC to take new initiatives for the welfare of tribal people of the North-eastern States.
He suggested that more awareness camps should be organised to disseminate various schemes among the target group and simplify the rules and procedure for availing benefits under such schemes.
In his address, NSTDFC chairman-cum-managing director (CMD) Asit Gopal emphasised taking up sustainable livelihood ventures and motivate youth to be job-givers rather than job-seekers.
The event has been designed to boost the lending schemes of NSTFDC and spur collaborative arrangement with Khadi Kand Village Industries Commission (KVIC) and facilitate implementation of Central government’s flagship scheme Prime Minster Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP).
