Nagaland’s Café Captain Americano among Times Food & Nightlife Award winners

Café Captain Americano from Nagaland was named Noteworthy Newcomer Café-Casual Dining at the Times Food & Nightlife Awards 2024-2025, Kolkata.

What started out in 2023 as a cozy coffee house in Dimapur, Nagaland, serving espresso, lattes, mocktails and small bites soon took off as a successful business venture.

“Why Café Captain Americano? In Nagaland, my friends and family fondly refer to me as ‘Captain Americano,’ a nickname that stuck after I developed a taste for Americano coffee. Soon, the nickname become synonymous with great coffee, and driven by my passion for coffee, I decided to establish my first café in Dimapur naming it Café Captain Americano,” the café’s owner, Mikato Shohe shared.

In September 2024, the Café opened its new branch in the city of joy-Kolkata. Offering a dive into the enchanting tastes of Naga food and coffee, the café made it to the list of Zee Zest’s top 10 ‘must-visit’ cafes and restaurants in Kolkata for the month of December.

In no time, it created a buzz similar to the one back home in Nagaland, and on December 17, 2024, Café Captain Americano was among the big winners at the event celebrating culinary excellence in India.

Each year, the Times Food & Nightlife Awards honours the best restaurants, bars, pubs, nightclubs, eateries etc. for their innovation and ability to stand out from the crowd. With thousands of nominations and 1.8 million public votes, Times Food & Nightlife Awards has garnered immense popularity and influence over the years. With votes from the public and food critic/s from their respective cities, the final awardees are determined.

Speaking to The Morung Express, Shohe said, “Winning this award is truly an honour and I feel incredibly grateful for the recognition. It validates the hard work and dedication of our entire team at Cafe Captain Americano. This achievement inspires us to continue pushing the boundaries of excellence in our service and offerings.”

On being asked about the café’s plans for the future, Shohe added, “We have exciting plans in store. We’re looking to expand our menu with new and innovative beverages and food, enhance our community engagement through events and collaborations, and possibly explore new locations to share our passion for coffee with even more people. Our goal is to create a welcoming space where everyone feels at home while enjoying the best coffee experience possible.”
