KOHIMA, NOVEMBER 23 (MExN): The Nagaland Police has issued an advisory cautioning citizens about the rising incidents of WhatsApp hacking. The Advisory, which was shared on its social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, highlighted that scammers exploit social media platforms by sending malicious links or APK files. Upon clicking these links, users risk having their WhatsApp accounts compromised.
Another method used by hackers involves tricking users into sharing their WhatsApp verification codes. Once obtained, these codes allow scammers to hijack accounts. Hacked accounts are then used to solicit financial assistance from the victim’s contacts, and in some cases, to carry out other illegal activities.
SAFETY MEASURES
Enable Two-Step Verification: Activate this feature to enhance the security of your WhatsApp account.
Avoid Clicking on Unknown Links: Refrain from clicking or installing links and APK files from unverified sources.
Do Not Share Verification Codes: WhatsApp will never ask for your verification code. Sharing it with anyone is a red flag for potential scams.
Spread Awareness: Inform others about hacked accounts to prevent financial loss and other crimes.
Recover Hacked Accounts: If your account is hacked, reinstall WhatsApp immediately to initiate recovery and block further misuse.
Verify Monetary Requests: Always call the sender to confirm the authenticity of financial aid requests received via WhatsApp.
