Nagaland Police observes Police Commemoration Day

Along with the rest of the nation, Nagaland Police today observed Police Commemoration Day by holding a ceremonial parade at PHQ Kohima.

Nagaland’s Director General of Police (DGP) Rupin Sharma and several police officers laid wreath at the cenotaph and paid respect to 214 police personnel who laid down their lives in the line of duty all over India during the preceding year.

“Today is not mere day of mourning but a day of celebrating the spirit of selfless sacrifice of the police men and women who have become immortal through their deeds. Today, let us renew our pledge to serve our people, to secure and maintain the integrity of our nation and make the supreme sacrifice when needed,” the DGP said.

During the last year, 214 Policemen all over India have made the supreme sacrifice of laying down their precious lives in the line of protecting the integrity and security of the country and trying to make the lives of all citizens of the country safe and secure, thus providing an environment for the peaceful economic development of the country and for each individual to progress and prosper, Sharma said.

He acknowledged the sacrifice and contribution of the 4 brave martyrs of Nagaland Police who sacrificed their lives under extenuating circumstances while fulfilling their duties.

The DGP also acknowledged and appreciated the untiring efforts of every Nagaland Police personnel during the last year.
“Foregoing the opportunities and occasions to enjoy festivals and occasions with their families, our personnel, with extreme dedication and unflinching sense of duty have ensured that everyone in the state can enjoy their lives with near and dear ones,” he said.

They not only maintained law and order and public peace but also successfully conducted two very peaceful elections in the State and the Lok Sabha elections 2024, enduring extreme heat, rendering vigilant service which has appreciated by the public in general, the DGP said.

About Police commemoration day
The DGP said that the inception of the Police Commemoration Day dates back to a historical event that changed the perception on the sacrifices made by policemen.

On this day, October 21, in 1959 a CRPF Mobile Patrolling Party led by DCIO Karam Singh was ambushed in Aksai- Chin area of Ladakh by overwhelming numbers of Chinese troops.

10 personnel were killed on the spot the rest were taken as prisoners.

The Chinese handed over the dead bodies of the deceased on the 13th of November 1959 and the valiant fallen were cremated on 14th November at Hot Springs located at an altitude of 16000 feet in Ladakh.

In 1960, the heads of Police of all States of India in a Conference decided to observe 21st October every year as the “Police Commemoration Day” throughout India.
