Nagaland PHED drives community involvement in sanitation initiatives

Phek, March 15 (MExN): A one-day block level Information, Education and Communication (IEC) and capacity building training was held for Sekrezu block at Vamuzo hall, Chozuba town on March 12. It was organised by PHED, Phek Division and sponsored by Sanitation and WSSO, PHED, Nagaland, Kohima.

 
 

The main objective of the training was to achieve positive behavioural change, promote sustainable Open Defecation Free practices and ensure community involvement in sanitation initiatives, to make sure that the assets created under Swachh Bharat Mission Grameen (SBMG) and Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) are effectively utilize in a right way.  

A total of 17 villages under Sekrezu block attended the training. The trainees include Village council committee, WATSAN committee and Swachagrahis, a press release received here stated. 

 
 

Ellies Yanthan, State WASH Consultant, PHED, Kohima shared on Solid Waste Management, importance of water quality at household and community level and the strategies for preservation and conservation of water and good practices. 

Abigail Ritse, Hygiene & Sanitation Consultant, PHED, Phek highlight grey water management and faecal sludge management. Ill-effects use of Single Use Plastic and importance of plastic waste management was shared by Kutulu vero, District Co-ordinator, PHED, Phek.

To enhance the knowledge of the stakeholders on SBMG as well as to improve the quality of interaction with the communities, a WhatsApp online based SBMG academy exam was conducted after the training session. 

Following the training, PHED, Phek division and State consultants conducted a field visit to Thurutsuswumi village on March 13, for direct observation of sanitation facilities and hygiene practices. 

As part of the campaign, sanitation posters were put up at community hall, school and Anganwadi centres.
