Kohima/New Delhi, February 6 (MExN): The Nagaland’s lone representative to Lok Sabha Supongmeren Jamir today raised the issue of two agreements signed Naga Political Groups (NPGs) in the parliament and urged the Union Government to implement them at the earliest.

Responding to the President President Droupadi Murmu’s statement that ten peace agreements have been signed by the Government of India in the North East to foster peace and eliminate the sense of alienation of the people of the region, he regretted that the two agreements “Framework Agreement” and the “Agreed Position”, signed almost 10 years and 8 years ago respectively, have not been implemented.

As per a press release from the NPCC, Jamir also noted that presently there were 26 groups operating in Nagaland, leading to ‘unabated taxation and rampant corruption,’ and wondered whether the GoI, the State Government or the NPGS were to be held responsible for the sad state of affairs.

To this end, he urged the Union Government to implement the agreements at the earliest to bring peace and economic progress to the state.

The “Framework Agreement” was signed with the NSCN (IM) on August 3, 2015, while the “Agreed Position” was inked with Working Committee, Naga National Political Groups on November 17, 2027.

Meanwhile, Jamir further highlighted the acute infrastructure challenges plaguing Nagaland University, including the lack of both indoor and outdoor sports infrastructure, hostel infrastructure and laboratory facilities, and urged the Union Government to provide the necessary support to address the same.

He also appealed for allocation of additional seats for the students hailing from the minority communities and those from other states.

He also raised concern over the conspicuous absence of the idea of secularism in the President’s address and affirmed its overarching binding role in holding together the myriad of diverse cultures, identities and peoples thriving across the nation, the release added.
