Government Schools (GHS) in Nagaland have bounced back from a relatively negative result in 2022, with a higher passing percentage, lower ‘zero/nil result,’ and more schools achieving a 100% pass percentage in the results for the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) exams announced on May 24.

According to the results declared by the Nagaland Board of School Education (NBSE), the overall pass percentage of candidates in the state increased from 64.69% in 2022 to 70.30% in 2023, and the GHSs recovered from a lowly 36.62% in 2022 to 49.13% in 2023.

The improvement, although not comparable to the performance of private schools at 91.15%, is the best since 2017, if not the highest pass percentage to date.

The results may come as a relief to concerned authorities and other stakeholders as there was a declining trend during the previous two years.

However, with the overall state’s clearance rate of 70.32% in 2023, the performance of GHSs, despite the improvement, requires continued attention from those in charge.

District-wise performance
In terms of district-wise performance for GHSs, Kohima district topped the table with a percentage of 73%, followed by Mokokchung and Phek districts at 70% and 63%, respectively. These districts were the only ones in Nagaland with pass percentages above the State’s GHS average of 49.13% in 2023.

At the bottom was Shamator with just a 6% pass percentage, followed by Kiphire (12%) and Noklak (22%). The performances of the rest of the districts, in descending order, were as follows: Chümoukedima (48%), Peren (47%), Dimapur (45%), Tseminyu (42%), Zunheboto (39%), Wokha (35%), Tuensang (35%), Niuland (32%), Mon (30%), and Longleng (28%).

Despite this, a comparison with the previous year’s records shows that all districts, except for Peren, showed marked improvement in 2023. Additionally, data for four newly created districts were featured separately in the result gazette for the first time.

The performance of Peren is concerning as the district’s performance falls below the State’s average for the first time in four years, and the pass percentage has been on a declining trend since 2021.

Of 100’s & 0’s
Meanwhile, GHSs achieving 100% pass results more than doubled from previous years, with 29 schools achieving the feat in 2023. This represents a 141.66% increase from 2022 when only 12 GHSs managed to secure this achievement.

Mokokchung district led the tally with 14 GHSs having a 100% pass percentage, followed by 6 in Kohima, 5 in Phek, 2 in Longleng, and 1 each in Wokha and Zunheboto districts.

Besides the five GHSs under Mokokchung district – Yaongyimsen Compound, Khar, Longjang, Unger, and Saring – have maintained a 100% pass record for three consecutive years or more, indicating that it is not a fluke performance.

However, GHSs with ‘zero/nil results’ remain a concerning issue, although the number declined by 24.22% from 33 in 2022 to 25 schools.

Out the total, four were from Tuensang district, followed by three each in Kiphire, Phek and Wokha while the districts of Longleng, Mokokchung, Niuland, Tseminyu and Zunheboto had 2 each.

One school each in Noklak and Peren had ‘zero/nil result,’ while there were no such results in Chümoukedima, Dimapur, Kohima, Mon and Shamator districts.
