Nagaland’s Commissioner & Secretary for School Education & SCERT, Kevileno Angami today called upon the heads of Government Schools to keep themselves updated and upgrade themselves to the changing trends in the present society.
Speaking at the “One day orientation programme for heads of Government schools under Kohima and Tseminyu district” at Ura Academy Hall Kohima, she also called upon the head of the government schools to ‘be open to ideas and be receptive to ideas.’
“We are living in time square where changes are happening very fast and therefore we have to keep ourselves updated and upgrade ourselves and be open to ideas and be receptive to ideas,” she said.
She urged upon the teachers to handle and nurture children well so that they (students) grow up as an asset to the society and the country.
Despite the challenges of not getting the necessary support, many head educators are performing seriously, she said and congratulated them for being able to come up with innovative ways in many aspects.
“We have to realize that despite the challenges there are always opportunities, there are always ways to solve problems if we are innovative and if we are open to ideas,” the Commissioner & Secretary said.
School heads urged to do better
Stating that the National Education Policy has been monitored by Prime Minister’s office, she called upon the heads of Government schools to do better for overall improvement of education system in the state.
Stressing on the need to understand the difficulties and the circumstances of the children, she said capacitation, orientation and care is very essential.”
Our teachers have to be capacitated enough to understand whether the child is disabled or has got special needs to look for, she said.
She was optimistic that with the cooperation and leadership of the heads of government schools, “We will be able to bring changes in our schools, in our children and in our society.”
Delivering keynote address, Emilo Patton, District Education Officer Kohima said that education is the most important weapon to bring changes in the society.
“Education is not only about helping our children to learn different subjects in the classrooms but also to mould them to become better human beings, she said.
Today, schools occupy the most important agency of education, she said adding that unless the schools are run properly; quality education will not take place.
“School heads are responsible for overall management of schools. The success and achievements of any school depends on the efficiency and abilities of the school heads. Therefore, the role of school heads as administrators is very important,” she said.
School heads ask to make effort to curtail drop-out cases
Kelhikha Kenye, Deputy Mission, Director Samagra Shiksha Nagaland made a power point presentation on activities implemented by Samagra Shiksha Nagaland.
He also spoke on the challenging emerging roles of school heads in the light of New Education Policy 2020 where teachers and school heads are required to take positive transformative initiatives in schools to improve overall competency based quality education.
While sharing the various grants provided by Samagra Shiksha to schools, he encouraged the school heads to judiciously utilize the resources and improve basic indicators such as provision of drinking water facility for students, functional toilets, ramps, functional electricity, reading corners and others.
Kenye also encouraged the school heads to document community participation in their respective schools and share good practices.
He presented on various educational indicators of the State as per UDISE data and expressed concern over increasing drop-out cases in Primary and Elementary stages and asked school heads to make effort to curtail student drop-out cases.
Kenye also spoke on the need for intensive identification of Out of School Children (OoSC) by SMCs and SMDCs to bring them back to schools as per provision under Right to Education (RTE) entitlement.
Other resource persons of the orientation programme includes; B Nellayapan, Deputy Director & Nodal Officer, NEMIS, School Education Nagaland and Vikedono Sesa, Joint Director, SCERT Nagaland.
Top performing schools honoured
The programme also witnessed presentation of award to some schools for their excellent performance.
Awardees under Primary School Leaving Certificate Examination (PSLCE) for Class 5 includes; GPS Kenuozou, GPS D Block, GMS P Khel, GMS Bayavu, GMS Merhulietsa, GMS Naga Bazar, GHS Tasazhu and GHS New Market.
Also GHSS Kigwema for securing 100% in HSLC Examination, GHSS Jotsoma for securing 100 % in HSSLC Examination (Commerce Stream) as well as 4 topper (Arts Stream) and GHSS Rüzhükhrie for securing 100% in HSSLC Examination (Commerce Stream) as well as 1st, 2nd & 3rd Toppers (Commerce Stream).
This orientation programme was organized by District Education Office, SDEO & DMA, Kohima.
Earlier, Rokopheno Chase, GT, GHS Chandmari, Kedizelhou Rutsa, GT, GHSS Sechii and Albert Tsela, GT, GMS Upper Tesophenyu shared experiences.
The programme was chaired by Neivikhono while vote of thanks was proposed by Kevizeno Savino, Sr SDEO, Kohima.
