DIMAPUR, JULY 19 (MExN): The Nagaland State Government has introduced an anti-defection ordinance for Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) following the first ULB elections in over 20 years, held in June. The ordinance, titled “Disqualification on Ground of Defection in Urban Local Bodies Ordinance, 2024,” was published in the Nagaland Gazette Extraordinary on July 15.

Promulgated by the Governor of Nagaland, L Ganesan, the ordinance comes into immediate effect. It disqualifies members who resign from their political party or vote against party directives without permission. Exceptions are made for mergers if two-thirds of a legislature party’s members agree. The ordinance designates the Chairman of the Urban Local Body as the final decision-making authority on disqualification matters, with the power to establish rules for its implementation.
