Party leaders stresses on grassroots engagement; flays ruling governments

The Congress Party of the 23 Impur Assembly Constituency held an installation ceremony for its treasurer on Tuesday in Kobulong, Mokokchung district.

Various leaders and officials of the party, including those from the District Congress Committee (DCC) Mokokchung, the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC), and the former candidate of 23 Impur A/C, Bendangkokba attended the event.

In his address, DCC Mokokchung President Watimongba highlighted the constituency’s historic support for Congress in past elections.

Although the constituency is currently represented by a legislator from another party, Watimongba encouraged attendees to work toward reviving Congress’s influence in the region.

Emphasising the need for grassroots engagement, he called on party members to secure at least 7,000 voter registrations from the constituency’s approximately 12,000 voters to ensure Congress’s future success.

He urged members to work relentlessly to re-establish Congress leadership in what he described as one of the most important constituencies in Nagaland’s 60-member assembly.

Bendangkokba, the former candidate from the constituency and a prospective candidate for future elections, addressed the gathering by reflecting on the recent Lok Sabha election, calling it a triumph of hard work and divine providence.

Despite financial challenges, he credited the victory to dedication and resilience, even in the face of overwhelming odds posed by 60 MLAs from the opposition-less ruling government.

He further criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at both the national and state levels, claiming that the latter rise to power was reliant on alliances with other parties, and said that the BJP now struggles to make major decisions at the centre
He further asserted that the nation has grown weary of the BJP’s rule, referencing the recent MP election results in the country as well as in Nagaland as evidence of declining support.

Turning his attention to the State Government, Bendangkokba condemned the government’s handling of the economy, accusing it of being weak and inefficient.

He pointed out the district’s lack of development, with 11 Ao MLAs in the assembly, especially in health and education, citing the absence of a functional hospital in Mokokchung while other districts are opening medical colleges.

He lamented that students from the district are forced to seek better educational opportunities elsewhere, calling for the election of capable leaders who prioritise local development.

The installation programme also featured the hoisting of the Congress flag by DCC Mokokchung President Watimongba, as well as speeches by several party leaders, including Mahila President Rongsenla Jamir, DCC Vice President L. Yanger, and PCC Secretary Imsunok Jamir.
