Nagaland conferred with Excellence Award for Disaster Risk Reduction

KOHIMA, DECEMBER 13 (MExN): The State of Nagaland has been conferred the prestigious Award of Excellence and Innovation in Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) by the International Institute of Security and Safety Management (IISSM) for its exemplary efforts in disaster management. The award was presented during the 34th IISSM Annual Global Conclave held on December 12 at Taj Vivanta, Dwarka, New Delhi. The Conclave will conclude on December 13.

The recognition, nominated by the National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM), highlights Nagaland’s significant advancements in DRR initiatives. The state’s initiatives include financial resilience mechanisms for disaster response, groundbreaking advancements in hazard preparedness, and collaborative actions to enhance disaster mitigation strategies, a press release issued by Lhouchalie Viya, Commissioner & Secretary Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) informed. 

The award was presented by Sanjay Seth, Minister of State for Defence, Government of India, who commended Nagaland’s achievements during the ceremony. He praised the state’s commitment to building safer, more resilient communities and its forward-thinking approach to addressing climate change and disaster challenges.

“It demonstrates the government’s commitment to building a safer and more resilient community by exemplifying a forward-thinking approach to addressing the challenges posed by climate change and disasters,” Seth stated. 

Nagaland’s Chief Minister, Neiphiu Rio, was invited as a distinguished guest at the award ceremony to receive the recognition. On behalf of the Government of Nagaland, officials from the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), including Johnny Ruangmei, Joint Chief Executive Officer, attended the event to receive the award.

This year’s Conclave which is being held on the theme, “Total Loss Prevention – Risk to Resilience” will address some of the most pressing challenges of the 21st century, including climate change, disaster management, global security, and social equity.
