State funeral in Kohima today, all govt offices to close

Nagaland Chief Secretary Tali Temjen Toy passed away on Thursday evening in Kohima after a prolonged illness.

He was 57 and is survived by his wife, 2 sons and 2 daughters. An IAS cadre from Nagaland, Toy entered the service in 1989 and served the State Government in various capacities.

According to the Government of Nagaland’s ‘State Civil List,’ he was appointed to the present post on January 1, 2019.

However, he served as the CS for some months earlier after assuming the responsibility on March 17, 2018.

The State Government has decided to accord State Funeral to Late Temjen Toy on January 29, 12:00 noon at the Official residence of Chief Secretary, Nagaland, Officers Hill, Kohima.

All the Government Offices in Kohima on January 29 have been directed to remain closed so as to enable government employees to pay their last respect to the departed soul.

In a press release, the State Cabinet expressed sadness at Toy’s demise and placed on record its appreciation of his 32 years of “exceptional services.”

Late Temjen Toy joined the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in 1989. During his illustrious career he served in several important positions in the government with distinction. He was Deputy Commissioner of Mokokchung during trying times and “his exceptional handling of the delicate law and order situation during that period is still talked about,” the cabinet stated.

“While at the helm of the affairs in all the major departments of the State, he provided outstanding leadership and left an indelible mark in every department he worked in. He displayed splendid administrative acumen while serving as Commissioner Nagaland as well as the Principal Secretary to two Chief Ministers,” it added.

The State cabinet said that “his leadership to the entire government machinery, his matured and measured advice, counsel, and the tremendous goodwill enjoyed by him cutting across the length and breadth of the State was a source of immense strength to the Cabinet and the government officials.” The late Chief Secretary also made tremendous contributions and galvanized the entire Government machinery to fight the Covid-19 pandemic ensuring the people of the State were least affected.

The void created by the demise of late Temjen Toy would be difficult to fill, the cabinet stated while also conveying condolences to the bereaved family.

Meanwhile as a mark of respect, the President of Eastern Nagaland Public Organisation has declared half-day mourning from 6 am to 12 Noon on January 29 in all Eastern Nagaland area.

“During the mourning hours, all government offices, school institutions and business establishments throughout Eastern Nagaland shall remain closed,” a statement from ENPO informed.
