In a landmark move, the state government and the British High Commission India have signed a historic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to reserve five annual slots in the prestigious Chevening Scholarship program exclusively for candidates from Nagaland.

The signing ceremony was held at the chief minister’s official residence on November 30, 2024. The MoU was signed by advisor to CM and chairman of the Investment & Development Authority of Nagaland (IDAN) Abu Metha, and British Deputy High Commissioner, Kolkata, Dr. Andrew Fleming. State chief minister Neiphiu Rio and British High Commissioner to India, Lindy Cameron were present during the event.

According to DIPR, the initiative was conceived and facilitated by IDAN, underscoring its commitment to driving investment in human capital and fostering international partnerships.

The Chevening Scholarship program, a flagship initiative of the UK government, is renowned globally for nurturing exceptional individuals with leadership potential. The program aims to equip scholars with advanced knowledge and skills in their chosen fields, enabling them to become changemakers in their communities.

The scholarships will provide full funding for a one-year master’s degree at any UK university. The Nagaland government will part-fund the reserved slots, ensuring access for deserving candidates to join the Chevening’s global network of changemakers.

Applications will follow the standard Chevening process, with a panel comprising experts from both the UK government and Nagaland government evaluating the candidates. The application process is set to begin in mid-2025. Aspiring candidates are encouraged to contact IDAN for guidance on the application procedure.

This partnership is a transformative step for Nagaland, which is poised for significant economic and social growth, DIPR stated. With the state requiring advanced human capital to drive its development, these scholarships will play a pivotal role in cultivating future leaders, fostering global academic engagement, and showcasing Nagaland’s unique potential on the international stage.

The collaboration also reaffirms Nagaland’s commitment to leveraging education as a cornerstone of progress, aligning its growth with global standards, and creating opportunities for its youth to engage in cutting-edge intellectual and professional pursuits.
