Dimapur | April 22
After two days of deliberations about business and economic activities between Nagaland and Assam, apex business bodies of the two states have agreed on a number of resolutions to strengthen economic ties.
Confederation of Nagaland Chamber of Commerce & Industry (CNCCI) and Assam Chamber of Commerce (ACC) noted that border tension between the two states and chakka bandhs often lead to stoppage of economic activities. However, the two bodies resolved to form a coordination committee to facilitate smooth flow of economic activities and transport of essential commodities even during bandhs and whenever border issue arises. They affirmed that border issue was something that concerns the state governments but resolved not to let the economic activities get disturbed out of such tensions.
Addressing media persons in Dimapur on April 21, CNCCI Chairman, Dr Khekugha Muru and ACC Secretary General, Sisir Dev Kalita said they have also resolved to mutually benefit each other in the agri and allied sector.
In this regard, the ACC agreed to set up district level mandi committees to directly procure farmers’ produces from Nagaland which would also form committees in every district to tie up with the mandis from Assam. ACC agreed to market the produces from Nagaland even beyond the jurisdiction of the mandis.
Dr Khekugha said this agreement was made to remove any middlemen and to benefit both sides since the two states have different climatic conditions and would be able to procure off season produces from each side while the season is peak on the other side. The two sides would also approach the agri and allied departments in their respective states in this regard.
Kalita said the two sides were creating a system where the farmers and other stakeholders would benefit and that they would approach companies to buy goods from them.
CNCCI and ACC also resolved to jointly spearhead formation of Northeast Coordination Committee comprising of Chambers of Commerce from all the eight states.
