Against the backdrop of the political crisis in Bangladesh and the potential influx of illegal Bangladeshis immigrants in Northeast, Nagaland state is on high alert to prevent infiltration of illegal immigrants.

In a press conference held this evening at the Commissioner’s conference hall following the video conference held with all the Deputy Commissioners in the state, Home Commissioner Vyasan R highlighted the state’s preparedness in light of the potential impact of the ongoing political crisis in Bangladesh – the risk of an influx of illegal immigrants.

Emphasising on the importance of vigilance across all levels of administration and law enforcement, Vyasan said the DCs has been informed to activate security coordination mechanisms within their respective districts.

“We should remain alert and alive to the situation so that it shouldn’t be the case that the administration, police and the entire state is taken by surprise,” he stated. He pointed out the importance of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system in monitoring and controlling movement asserting that ILP checks must be intensified, with surprise inspections.

Underscoring the role of the village council set up in the state, Vyasan said, the DCs has been advised to activate the VCs in their respective districts to ensure that the communication channels are open.

This, he said, is to ensure that any unnatural movements and incidents that is likely out of the ordinary are promptly reported, allowing for swift action. He also informed that cross meeting with ‘our’ Assam counterpart has been initiated, as 90% chance of potential movement would be from that region.

“Once, the DCs are on the same page, it would be very helpful as they will acts as early warning systems” said Vyasan.

The Home Commissioner has expressed his happiness that even before the video conference with district officials, many DCs had already activated their security networks, conducting surprise checks in their districts and reaching out to their counterparts in Assam.

He reiterated that the entire district administration apparatus must remain on high alert inorder that the state is alive to the situation and knows what to expect.

DCs of Dimapur, Chümoukedima, and Niuland have been alerted to conduct surprise checking where checking are also going on in Wokha, Dimapur and Peren, he informed.

When enquired, Vyasan maintained that there are no reports of unusual movements so far, and on the effectiveness of the ILP to check influx of illegal immigrants in the state, he claimed that the current measures are fairly effective, and iterated that ILP checks must be intensified.
