Dimapur | March 29
The Naga Hoho said that it would wish for all Nagas, irrespective of political borders, coming together as one. The statement came from its former President, HK Zhimomi, on March 28, in Dimapur, where the Naga Hoho held its second Federal Assembly.
A straining of relations, largely owed to a growing narrative that has drawn a line between Nagas of Nagaland and Manipur, has brought the hoho in variance with its foundational pan-Naga spirit.
Zhimomi acknowledged the perceived discord, replying to a query from the media after the meeting, but expressed desire to reverse it. He said, “We want to improve it and want to see that all come together. I cannot force anyone; otherwise there is nothing wrong in the Naga Hoho coming together. We have been appealing and still appealing that all must come together… At this juncture in particular.”
According to him, even the Government of India (GoI) is blaming the Naga Hoho for the disunity.
The details of what transpired in the meeting were not disclosed with Zhimomi only stating that seven agenda was discussed. Writing to the GoI with regard to the Free Movement Regime was reportedly one.
He said that differences of opinion arose during the course of the 5-hour long meeting but that things were settled. Opinions diverged reportedly over its incumbent President issuing a press statement without consulting his executives. Zhimomi added that forgiving and combining as one body was the main thing discussed.
Zhimomi is currently the Convener-cum-advisor, Political Affairs Committee, Naga Hoho. He added that barring the affiliates from the state of Nagaland, 16-17 units from Assam and Manipur attended. The federal assembly was hosted by the Rengma-Zeliangrong Joint Council Assam.
The incumbent President, Sulanthung Lotha declined to make any comment.
President of the United Naga Council, NG Lorho said that it has no objection to the recent move made by civil society organisations (CSO), led by the Nagaland Gaonbura Federation. At a meeting on March 20, in Dimapur, Naga CSOs had pitched a new demand for merging of the Framework Agreement and the Agreed Position into one common charter. The UNC, however, was not part of the meeting.
