The newly elected president had been taking charge as acting president since September 7, 2020 after the former president of NCD late K Ghoketo Chophy had gotten ill and passed away on December 11, 2020.
Delivering a short speech at the programme, newly elected NCD president Etsungmomo Kikon expressed regret over numerous challenges and litigation that NCD had faced during the recent past hampering the smooth functioning of the council. Kikon also said it had set a bad precedent and damaged the integrity of NCD that had been preserved since its inception in 1949.
Kikon, however, lauded the intervention and initiation of the Ao Senso Telongjem Dimapur (ASTD), which withdrew the court case without any conditions. He said that the concerted support rendered by ASTD not only resolved the pending litigation, but also immensely strengthened the oldest institution (NCD) in Dimapur.
NCD president said that the council would continue to look forward to ASTD’s “proficient advice and guidance” in its endeavor. He further appreciated ASTD for honouring NCD resolutions and sending two new councilors. Kikon, however, lamented that some tribal bodies were yet to respond to NCD directives even after two months of peaceful closure of the case.
According to Kikon, the council has absolute majority of 32 councilors out of total 41. He said 32 councilors were represented by 15 tribal hohos/unions out of 19 affiliated tribes besides two members from Naga Women Hoho Dimapur (NWHD) and one from Dimapur Naga Students Union (DNSU).
Kikon assured that NCD would work within the preview of its aims and objectives to safeguard the common interest of Nagas and Dimapur citizens.
NCD president has appealed to all the councilors not to influence the NCD with any political interference or allow external forces to destroy the unity among the Nagas, but jointly preserve the 72-year-old sanctity of NCD.
During the installation programme, search committee report was delivered by committee convener K Francis. He informed that the search committee was authorized to exercise full power as per the constitution under Article-8 of the NDC and the decision of the committee was to be considered legally final and binding.
