Sangtam Union Mokokchung Town (STUM) celebrated Mungmung festival at Multi Sports Complex, Mokokchung on September 3.
Dr Likhase Sangtam, Assistant Professor, Dept of Political Science, Nagaland University, while talking about the significance of the festival said that the Mungmung festival was celebrated from September 1-6 and on these days folk songs, dance and various other cultural traditions were performed and observed. He said that the festival was a time of forgiveness and showing mercy and strengthening the bond of unity.
“After the coming of Christianity, many old traditional practices were discarded. However, by observing such festivals as today, we are able to practice our culture, which God has bestowed on us, and not only that, it helps in bringing people of different tribes together, thereby strengthening our bond, “he said. He further said that we should continue to follow such cultural traditions so that we learn from each other and our ties will be strengthened.
The Sangtam Union Mokokchung Town President, Rajet, greeted and welcomed the gathering. Longdiba Sangtam, SDO (Civil) Mokokchung, Yangsümong, President of ENPU Mokokchung, and Chubawati Longchar, President of Ao Senden, also spoke on the occasion.
Various other cultural items like folk song, traditional firecraft, folk dance, and display of top spinning were performed by the Sangtam community members. The programme was followed by a Mungmung feast.
