More than 20 recognised villages in Kiphire district do not have government schools. It has been learnt that Kiphire district education office and senior sub-divisional education office had placed the matter before Kiphire District Planning & Development Board, which subsequently forwarded it to the State government in 2018.

But, since then there has been no positive outcome from the school education department.

District education officer (DEO) Deenabandhu Panda said the government had requested those villages to construct school buildings on their own and the school education department would provide teachers. Consequently, he said some villages constructed temporary school buildings, though the department was yet to provide teachers.

The DEO said the department was aware of the matter and was trying its best to accommodate the deprived students of the village and would make some arrangement in the coming year.

He said the villages that did not have schools at present would be able to send their children to Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vdyalaya (KGBV) residential school at Pungro and a similar school at Kiphire. Mentioning that lodging and food would be free, he said applications would have to be filed two months in advance at district education office, Kiphire.

As per section 6 of the Right to Education Act, 2009, a neighbourhood should have a primary school (Class 1 to 5) within one km radius and upper primary school (Class 6 to 8) within three km radius.

Lihtsaoung villagers air grievances: Established in 2011 and recognised by the State government in 2014, Lihtsaoung village in Kiphire district has no school.

Located in a remote area of the district and in the absence of public transport, more than 20 primary school students of the village have to walk 4/5 km every day to reach their school at Phelungre village, which takes nearly an hour to reach, and back.

Talking to Nagaland Post, village council chairman Tiaba Sangtam claimed that they had approached the department concerned several times and submitted written complaints, but with no positive outcome.

He said the school education department had urged the village council to construct a temporary school building and the department would provide teachers later.

He, however, lamented that the village had no fund to construct the school building. Hence, he appealed to the department to set up school in the village for the sake of the future generation.
