More rain in Nagaland, NE states till May 17: IMD

With the Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm “Mocha” making landfall on May 14 over  coastal Myanmar  and Bangladesh, the Indian Metrological  Department(IMD) has forecasted likelihood of more heavy rainfall in Nagaland and other North-East States during the next three days. 

At 8PM on Sunday, the IMD updated that the storm lay centred at 2:30 PM over coastal Myanmar near latitude 20.5°N and longitude 92.9°E, about 40 km north of Sittwe (Myanmar) and 145 km southeast of Cox’s Bazar (Bangladesh) but the system is weakening trend and “will weaken into a very severe cyclonic storm during next 3 hours.”

Accordingly, the national weather agency predicted very likelihood of   “fairly widespread to widespread rainfall” over NE during next 5 days and “heavy rainfall” at isolated places.

Between 8:30AM-5:30PM on Sunday, rainfall/thundershowers were observed at a few places over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura; at isolated places over Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan & Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh and Assam & Meghalaya, it added. 

Specifically, on May 15, the IMD forecasted “Heavy to very heavy rainfall very likely” at isolated places over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Assam, and Meghalaya.

Similar conditions were predicted for both May 16 and 17. 

However, on May 18, “Heavy to very heavy rainfall” was forecasted only at isolated places in  Assam and Meghalaya.
Meanwhile, the IMD’s Regional Met Centre Guwahati, issued “Orange” (Be Prepared) alert for most NE States including Nagaland from May 14-17 on Sunday due to cyclone Mocha. 

As per the Centre’s district-wise analysis, Phek and Kiphire experienced most rain on Sunday while on May 15,  it forecasted ‘Orange’ alert for Tuensang. From May 16-18, the intensity is predicted to decline.
