Ao Kaketshir Telongjem, Kohima Science College commemorates 50 years

KOHIMA, NOVEMBER 25 (MExN): Ao Kaketshir Telongjem (AKT), Kohima Science College, Jotsoma, marked its Golden Jubilee on November 23 with a grand celebration held at the college auditorium. The event was graced by Metsubo Jamir, Minister for Rural Development and SIRD, as the chief guest, with Supongnukshi, IFS and Chief Conservator of Forest, serving as the Jubilee speaker.

The celebrations were attended by a host of dignitaries from various tribal organizations, alumni, faculty members, students, and staff of the college. 

As part of the commemorations, a Golden Jubilee Souvenir was released by Metsubo Jamir, who emphasized the importance of the Ao community’s solidarity since its founding. In his speech, Jamir encouraged students to carry forward this legacy and stressed the need to protect the cultural heritage, even in the face of rapid technological advances that could impact language and traditions.

While acknowledging digital advancement and growing technological dependence, Jamir also cautioned about its negative impact on one’s culture and mother tongue. He concluded his speech by emphasizing on the need to strengthen unity and give back to our society.

Jubilee speaker, Supongnukshi, centered his address on the importance of perseverance in overcoming challenges. Drawing from his own life experiences of both failure and success, he reminded the students that “we become stronger in the parts broken” and encouraged them to be active contributors to society, rather than liabilities. He also highlighted the growing issue of youth unemployment due to rising competition and urged students to expand their horizons beyond formal education to create better opportunities.

In his exhortation, Chubayanger, President of Kohima Aoer Telongjem, reflected on the lasting impact of the institution, which has helped shape the careers of numerous Nagas, particularly Aos. He also stressed the need to preserve the dialect and its role as a core component of cultural identity.

Dr Watijungshi Jamir, Additional Director (Rtd.) of Higher Education and a pioneering member of the union, also spoke about the contributions of the Ao community to society, urging students to reflect on how they could continue to carry forward this legacy.

Dr Temjenwabang, Principal of Kohima Science College, Jotsoma, spoke about the role of student unions in guiding students away from home, particularly in such an important educational institution.

The event concluded with the adoption of a resolution by the Jubilee Resolution Committee to construct a new room for Kohima Science College. The program was chaired by the current executive members, with the invocation given by the Pastor of Ao Fellowship, KSCJ.

Other highlights included a welcome address by Sungjemmeren Imchen, President of AKTK, and a Jubilee greeting delivered by M. Shamba Phom, General Secretary of the Kohima Science College Students’ Union. The event ended with an intercessory prayer by Rev Yashila Jamir and a benediction by Moa Imsong.
