DIMAPUR, JUNE 18 (MExN): In a suspected case of food poisoning by eating contaminated fish, around forty three (43) person hailing from Pongching village under Longleng district were hospitalized on June 16 with complaints of vomiting and diarrhea.
A DIPR report stated that on receipt of information, Longleng police led by the SP visited the District Hospital, Longleng for preliminary inquiry. It was established by the police that the mass food poisoning occurred after the villagers consumed fish bought from a local shopkeeper on June 14.
The villagers had gone to a terrace paddy field to work on June 15 and the fish was consumed during lunchtime.
However, by evening, most of the villagers who had consumed the fish complained of diarrhea, stomach ache and had to be hospitalized the next day.
Representative (s) from the food safety department and the chamber of commerce, Longleng also visited the hospital and met with the victims. Samples of the cooked fish and the fish from the same stock of supply was also collected and sent to the food analyst, State Public Health Laboratory for analysis. Further, statements from the doctors, patients the fish seller were recorded and the shop was sealed for further course of action.
Further investigation is ongoing, and the public have been requested to co-operate and refrain from any rumor-mongering, the DIPR report stated.
