The office of the Regional Officer (RO) of the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) in Kohima was temporarily closed down today by the aggrieved landowners affected by Kohima-Jessami 2-lane road construction project- packages II, III, IV, & V.
The aggrieved landowners are demanding fair compensation for lateral damages.
This action was taken after the expiry of the ultimatum issued on 25th Oct. 2024, to NHIDCL, which yielded no positive response from the Executive Director of NHIDCL, according to Küvelüyi Chuzho, Convenor, Aggrieved Landowners 2 Lane Road Construction. Chuzho stated that “Despite numerous pleas and representations made by the affected landowners, NHIDCL has shown a lack of urgency and commitment in addressing their grievances. The delay in providing lateral damage compensation and the continued neglect of the plight of the landowners has only added to their frustration and despair.”
In an amicable manner, the aggrieved landowners decided to temporarily close the office of the RO NHIDCL at 1:30 pm today, he stated.
He stated that no damages were incurred during this closure, adding that “The office will remain closed indefinitely until a written assurance is received from NHIDCL, mentioning as to when and how the damage compensation will be paid on a mutually agreed upon time line.”
“The closure of the RO NHIDCL office serves as a symbolic gesture of the landowners’ determination to seek justice and rightful compensation for the damages caused by the construction works,” the aggrieved landowners stated and urged upon the NHIDCL to take immediate action and fulfill its obligations to address their grievances.
