Land resources deptt launches calendar of activities

LRD TO DISTRIBUTE 1, 12,500 ARECA NUT SAPLINGS AND 50,000 AGAR SAPLINGS TO FARMERS BY JULY 21

Correspondent KOHIMA, JUL 8 (NPN) : Department of land resources launched a calendar of activities in commemoration of 74 years of India’s independence (azadi ka amrut mahotsav) to be implemented within a period of one and half year and also released activity brochures at its directorate on Wednesday.

Speaking at the launching programme, commissioner and secretary LRD Vikeyie Kenya exuded confidence that all the planned activities would come to reality within the targeted time and acknowledged the level of the commitment from officers towards the projects. In his welcome address, director LRD Renben Lotha said the activities were in tribute to the nation’s freedom, to look back at the achievement of the country and to work out what could be done for the nation’s posterity.

He said the activities were not just an event but a continuous process of how the country would be by the time India attains 100 years of independence.

The director lamented that in Nagaland, most of the items citizens used for comfort was imported which was something not to be proud of and mentioned the many resources that state could not tap.

He also said that 95% of coffee used by citizens of the state was imported from outside and the department was responsible to ensure that the production and consumption rate increased at least 25-30% by the year India celebrates 100 years of independence.

Under the department’s slogan “drink what you grow”, “grow local, eat organic”, “think blue, make every drop count”, Lotha was confident that these slogans would become the mantra of the department to build a robust Nagaland and a self-sufficient future.

He said that the department was responsible to propagate slogans of the department and disseminate about the same.

In her PowerPoint presentation, state project coordinator Inatoli asserted that the one and half month activities included grounding of new generation watershed programmes under PMKSY to be implemented in 12 districts by end of July. It also included distribution of 1, 12,500 Arecanut saplings and 50,000 Agar saplings to farmers by July 21 and promotion of permaculture design gardens in 12 districts by August 14. Another activity was 14 days of intensive training on 10 skills of Barista to the uneducated and unemployed.

The training would enable them in establishing their own coffee bars and launching of coffee bars in 11 districts for promotion of educated unemployed youth by August 14. Under the slogan “drink what you grow”, campaigns and training would be extensively covered on health benefits of tisane tea across the state. A few naturally grown herbal and endemic plants such as rosella, butterfly and blue tea, ginger and sumac etc would also be promoted by imparting training on value addition, low cost processing packaging and labelling to generate employment to educate youth who were unemployed due to the pandemic by August 14.
The department also distributed and planted 22000 coffee saplings and 300 arecanut saplings which were taken up under spring shed water development programme.

Other activities supported by NEC, 140 rubber sheet rollers, 200 coffee pulpers and two areca nut leaf plate machines would be distributed to identified growers and entrepreneurs in the district for post-harvest value addition which would make the products more competitive in the national and international market and help the farmers fetch better price by July 11. The commissioner and secretary launched the calendar of activities and brochures.
