Land ownership ‘biggest hurdle’ for developmental activities in Nagaland

The land holding system in Nagaland is peculiar. The State Government does not have land unlike other state governments in the country. “The issue of land ownership is the biggest hurdle in taking up developmental activities. And therefore, Government has to purchase land from private individuals for taking up of developmental activities,” according to Annual Administrative Report 2022-23 of Planning & Coordination department tabled in the recently concluded first session of 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly in Kohima.

During 2022-23; an amount of Rs 6500.08 lakh was provided for payment/acquisition of land measuring 240.584 acres for taking up of the developmental activities.

It included proposal for acquisition of land at Salangtem Ward, Mokokchung in respect of power department (Payment of backlog), purchase of land for Common Cemetery at Zunheboto, acquisition of land for Police Station at Chukitong, Wokha, acquisition of land for wrestling arena at Tsiesema, acquisition of land for development of Sub-Jail at Pfutsero, acquisition of land for construction of New SDO(C) office Complex at Sechu, Zubza, acquisition of land for Police Station at Upper Tiru, Mon, outright purchase of land at Khelhoshe Polytechnic, Atoizu, acquisition of land measuring 5.1 acres for re-location of P.H.E.D Water Treatment   Plant at Kohima Science College, Jotsoma, acquisition of land for DIET Tuensang, acquisition of land at Phriebagie, Kohima for Medical College (Payment of backlog), acquisition of land for setting up of Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) at Shokhuvi village (Payment of backlog) and purchase of Residential building along with land/plot near Chief Minister’s Residential Complex.
