KMC calls for proper waste disposal, management in Kohima

The Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) today called for proper waste disposal and management in Kohima.

Addressing the Information & Education Communication (IEC) awareness programme-cum-training on waste management with special focus on segregation at source and plastic waste management for all ULB staff and stakeholders here today at Capital Convention Centre, KMC Administrator, T Lanusenla Longkumer sought the role of stakeholders for placing a proper waste disposal and management mechanism in Kohima.

Stating that improper waste disposal has dangerous effects on “our health,” she called upon the citizens and stakeholders to put head together for a cleaner and healthier Kohima.

Also stating that KMC alone cannot handle the unceasing generation of waste in Kohima, she said that collective effort is needed to minimize and solve the problem.

The programme was attended by representatives from churches, educational institutions, CSOs/NGOs and ward sanitation committees. Vote of thanks was proposed by Neilhoukhrielie, Assistant Chief Inspector KMC.

Dos & don’ts
Bury carcass (poultry, pets etc) in own compound
Wrap sanitary waste (pads, diapers etc)
Spit in receptacle filled with sand
Use construction and demolition waste as fillers
Don’t throw, burry or burn waste in the open
Don’t dump waste in drain or water bodies
Don’t spit on roadside, public spaces
Don’t construct pigsty or toilet outlets near drain or roadside

Kohima generates 90,000 kgs waste day

Kohima generates 90,000 kgs waste per day and 3, 28, 50,000 kgs every year, said Niksungla, founder- chairman Living For Environment (LiFE).
She made a Powerpoint presentation on segregation at source and plastic waste management at the awareness and training programme.
LiFE is an environmental based NGO formed in 2016 with its headquarter in Dimapur.
She stated that the world generates 2.12 billion tons of waste every year while India generates 65 million tons of waste every year.
She challenged the citizens to think deeper on waste management and exercise “My Waste My Responsibility.”
