Jungle fire in Jakhama doused

Correspondent Kohima, JAN 7 (NPN) : In the backdrop of the wildfire raging at Dzükou range, another jungle fire broke out at Jakhama here on Thursday.

Although the fire had burnt trees and vegetation in an area spanning around 100 acres of land, fire tenders from both South and North fire stations along with local residents successfully doused the fire.

The fire broke out early morning on a small mount called Chemyo, part of Khadihela hillock, near St Joseph’s College, Jakhama. While it took fire tenders more than 10 hours to fully douse the fire, no casualties or injuries were reported in the incident. Revenue officer Keviletuo Nisa and SDO (C) Kohima, Daniel Angami along with EACs– Kezocha, Veneikho and Kevinguto were present at the site to coordinate and supervise the fire-controlling operation.

Adviser to chief minister, technical education and election Medo Yhokha, along with DC Kohima Mohammed Ali Shihab A, ADC Lithrongla Tongpi Rutsa, Jakhama Village Council chairman, DDMO Thejangulie Zao, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), fire & emergency services personnel and volunteers later visited the fire incident site.

They visited the site to gather first hand information about the incident and were informed that the fire was not related to Dzükou fire, which has been doused.

DDMA holds emergency meet: An emergency meeting of Kohima District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) was convened under the chairmanship of Shihab, who is also DDMA chairman, at his office here on Thursday.

The meeting was attended by OSD to Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) Johny Rongmei, Kohima SP Manoj Kumar, DFO Kohima Raj Kumar, ADC Lithrongla Tongpi Rutsa and others.

The meeting reviewed the entire operation activities of Dzükou fire operation. The DC informed the meeting that the team led by Kohima SDO (sadar) and SDPO South along with DB and others had reported that the fire on southern side was physically doused by the ground team and the fire was under control at the time of reporting.

The team stationed at base camp and valley will monitor the fire situation and plan for the next day’s operation by the first hours, he added.

The operation team during the day included a total of 303 personnel – 50 from NDRF, 25 from Kohima Police, 41 from State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), 17 from forest department, 40 military personnel and 40 SAYO volunteers camping at base camp along with additional personnel of 50 from Jakhama, 20 of Kohima Police and 20 from forest – had participated in ground operation on Thursday.
