It’s a Quartet! Four from Nagaland clears UPSC 2022-23

Four candidates from Nagaland have cracked the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) civil service examination 2022-23, the results of which were declared on Tuesday. 

The four candidates include Yimkum I Ozukum (203), Velotolu Kezo (387), Imkongnukla Ao (723) and Aotula Ozukum (874).  Last year, two from Nagaland namely Viku L Achumi and Imsennaro Walling, ranked 567 and 585, respectively had cleared the civil services exam from a total of 685 candidates. 

As per UPSC, this time, a total of 933 candidates have been recommended for appointment, of which 183 are chosen as IAS officers. Of the 933, 345 are from general category, 99 from Economic Weaker Sections, 263 from OBC, 154 from Scheduled Caste and 72 from Scheduled Tribe category. Ishita Kapoor from UP topped the Union Public Service Commission examinations. 

Interestingly, all the four candidates from Nagaland who cleared the UPSC had also cleared the Nagaland Public Service Commission (NPSC) exams in recent years and were appointed /selected in various capacities of Extra Assistant Commissioners (EAC), Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) and Secretariat Assistant (SA). 

Yimkum I Ozukum, who secured rank 203 and Imkongnukla Ao, rank 723 are EACs. Velotolu Kezo who secured rank 387 was selected as Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) while Aotula Ozukum, rank 874, a Secretariat Assistant. 

Speaking to The Morung Express, Yimkum I Ozukum, a B-Tech Civil Engineering graduate from BITS Pilani, Rajasthan said he was clearing UPSC on his fifth attempt. Ozukum is currently an EAC in Nsong town, Peren district. “I was extremely positive this time around; however I did not expect such ranking.”

Sharing his study module towards cracking the civil service exam, Ozukum observed that along with hard work, one equally need to do smart work with a clear and proper strategy. “Most aspirants look at coaching as the first approach when it comes to cracking UPSC. However, what is important is not the amount of coaching. Hard work is a key to getting there, but one also needs to be smart with a proper strategy and prioritizing actions especially when it comes to what to study.

UPSC syllabus is extremely huge and it is not just about remembering or understanding thing. It is a huge marathon and you need to keep on running, Ozukum pointed out while maintaining that perseverance and mental strategy is equally important. 

Velotolu Kezo, rank 387 said consistency and hard work along with managing time properly has been the key to clearing the civil services exam. 

“To crack the UPSC has been a motivation since childhood. My father, now a retired Advocate has been the guiding factor towards my journey in clearing the UPSC exam,” said Kezo who is a civil engineering graduate from NIT Nagpur. 

Kezo, who only recently cleared the NPSC exam and was selected for appointment as DSP said she would now opt for a position in the central civil services instead of the state civil services since this has been her long standing dream. 

20 from North-East clear UPSC 
This year’s UPSC result was also momentous for the North Eastern states. As many as 20 candidates cleared the prestigious UPSC exams 2022. Last year, nine candidates had cleared the civil services exam. The successful candidates include 6 from Assam, 4 from Nagaland, 4 from Manipur, 3 from Arunachal Pradesh and one each from Sikkim and Meghalaya.

Ishita Kapoor tops UPSC, top four bagged by women
Ishita Kapoor has topped the Union Public Service Commission examinations, results of which were announced on Tuesday. All the top four ranks in the examination have been bagged by women.

Ishita Kapoor topped the exam followed by Garima Lohia who secured second rank, Uma Harathi (third), Smriti Mishra (fourth), Mayur Hazarika (fifth), Gahna Navya James (sixth), Waseemm Ahmed Bhatt (seventh), Aniruddh Yadav (eighth), Kanika Goyal (ninth) and Rahul Shrivastava (tenth). How many marks the candidates have secured in the exams will be announced after 15 days.

The commission has also prepared a reserve list of 178 candidates. For appointment for IAS posts, 180 candidates have been shortlisted. It had conducted interviews in three phases for 2,589 candidates. The third and final phase of the interview was conducted on May 18. The commission had announced vacancies for 1,011 posts in civil services.
