Nagaland Board of School Education (NBSE) today stressed on the need to take all the good recommendations of National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and incorporate them into Nagaland’s education system.

Speaking at the one day seminar on ‘Creating curricular connection in the classroom vis-à-vis multi disciplinary approach (NEP 2020),’ here at Capital Convention Centre, NBSE Chairperson, Asano Sekhose highlighted various strategies and approaches of NEP 2020 and hoped that the competent team of teachers in Nagaland would take note of the same and take all the good recommendations of NEP 2020 into Nagaland’s state education system.

She maintained that the recommendations of NEP 2020 have opened many new ways that “our teachers need to adopt the new practices.”

“You know your subject matter, but then, we have to do things differently,” she said, advising the teachers to focus and ensure that the abilities of the students are developed, and that the students are learning with understanding and clarity.

Now with NEP 2020, she said, “we have to re-learn many things and we also need to adopt the best practices, new strategies that will help us to do better.”

“We need to discuss more on this and re-orient our teachers,” she said.

The role of the teachers, the competency level of the teachers in transacting the curriculum and implementation of the activities in the schools are very important, she said adding “Without the teachers, we will not be able to do anything.”

The role of teachers is very crucial in all regards, she maintained.

‘Learning incomplete without classroom teaching’
Sekhose said that during the last two years of COVID-19 pandemic, it has been shown that learning is incomplete without the teachers and without classroom connection as children faced a lot of difficulties without the classroom teaching.

“To engage the students in the classroom in a meaningful way is very important to provide quality education to our children,” she said.

Stating that teachers are the backbone of the education system, she said “The strength of our institution rests on each teacher.”

She told the seminar that NEP 2002 talks more about experiential learning and learning by doing.

Stressing on the need to adopt the new strategy, she said “Instead of making them (students) understand, if we are giving them notes only for them to read and we prepared them for only to sit for examination, our education will be incomplete.”

The NBSE chairperson stressed the need to focus more on this area so that the students can develop their abilities and do well in life.

Call for providing holistic education to children
Kevileno Angami, Commissioner & Secretary For School Education & SCERT, Nagaland told the seminar that NEP 2020 focuses and change the structure on multi disciplinary approach.

It talks about integration of arts, integration of sports, skill building, problem solving into the curriculum, she said while addressing the seminar organized by NBSE.

“We have to nurture children for the future,” she said and at the same time stressed on the need to create a conducive learning environment for children, who can be problem solvers and be able to take responsibility in the future.

Talking on the change in the nature of jobs which are available during the last few years, she said “It is not just academic anymore.”

In this, she stressed on the need to focus on creativity, ability to take up opportunities and ability to change the challenge into opportunities.

“We have to nurture and provide holistic education to our children,” she said.

Also stressing on the need to go forward and adapt to the new changes, she called upon the teachers to take a crucial role.

“The society is depending on you to bring about change for adoption and smooth transition from old to the new,” she said.

Dr. Neena Jha, Advisor, Education & Skills Practice, KPMG in India talked on “Creating curriculum connection in the classroom.”

The programme was chaired by NBSE, Senior Academic Officer, Iluheing Nsarangbe. NBSE academic officer Dzisevolie Tsurho prayed for the programme while vote of thanks was proposed by NBSE Secretary, Rangumbuing Nsarangbe.
