New Delhi, March 14 (MExN): The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast the likelihood of heavy rain and thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds in isolated places in Nagaland and other North-East states from March 15-17.
An update from the IMD on Friday evening attributed the weather conditions to a cyclonic circulation lying over east Assam and its neighbourhood at 0.9 km above mean sea level.
Accordingly, the national weather agency stated that “thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds (speed reaching 30-40 kmph) and lightning” are very likely at isolated places over Punjab, Delhi, Assam & Meghalaya, and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura on March 15.
Thunderstorms with lightning were also forecast at isolated places over Arunachal Pradesh, Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and East Uttar Pradesh.
Heavy rainfall (≥7 cm) is very likely at isolated places over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, and Arunachal Pradesh, it added.
Likewise on March 16, it predicted ‘thunderstorm accompanied with gusty winds (speed reaching 30-40 kmph) & lightning’ at isolated places over Assam & Meghalaya and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura and with lightning at isolated places over Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh and north Kerala & Mahe.
On March 17, the IMD predicted thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds (speed reaching 30-40 kmph) and lightning at isolated places over Assam & Meghalaya, and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura.
The IMD’s Meteorological Centre Kohima on Friday also forecasted scattered and isolated rainfall in all districts of Nagaland on March 15, with gusty winds alert in some locations.
Meanwhile, on March 14, the IMD noted that rainfall occurred at isolated places over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura, and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim. In some areas, there was snowfall.
The minimum temperature was above normal (1.6°C to 3.0°C) at a few places in Nagaland on March 14, while the maximum temperature was below normal (-3.0°C to -1.6°C) at isolated places.
Heat wave to severe heat wave conditions prevailed at a few places over Kutch and Diu on Friday, while heat wave conditions were reported at a few places over Vidarbha and at isolated places over interior Odisha.
The highest maximum temperature of 41.8°C was reported at Jharsuguda (Odisha) on Friday, the IMD added.
