The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday issued an ‘orange (be prepared)’ weather alert and forecasted “light to moderate rainfall at most places with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall” in Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura on June 9.

Furthermore, there is a likelihood of thunderstorms or lightning with gusty winds (30-40kms) at isolated places on Friday, informed the IMD’s Regional Meteorological Centre Guwahati via a special weather bulletin issued on June 8.

In an evening update, the IMD informed that between 8:30 AM and 5:30 PM on June 8, rainfall or thundershowers were observed at a few places over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and Lakshadweep.

Meanwhile, for June 10, thunderstorms with lightning are predicted at isolated places over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, Odisha, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura, and Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal, its said.

Similar weather conditions are expected for the aforementioned locations until June 12, as per the IMD’s All India Weather Forecast Bulletin.

The national weather agency attributes the current weather condition to the persistence of a cyclonic circulation over the east-central Bay of Bengal off the Myanmar coast, extending up to 5.8 km above mean sea level.

Additionally, the IMD informed that the Southwest Monsoon has advanced into the remaining parts of the south Arabian Sea and some parts of the central Arabian Sea, the entire Lakshadweep area, most parts of Kerala, most parts of south Tamil Nadu, remaining parts of the Comorin area, Gulf of Mannar, and some more parts of the southwest, central, and northeast Bay of Bengal on June 8.

Thus, the Southwest Monsoon has set in over Kerala today, which is in line with the normal date of June 1, added the IMD.
