ICAR Medziphema explores opportunities and challenges of agricultural sector in NE

Medziphema, February 8 (MExN): ICAR research complex for NEH region, Nagaland centre, Medziphema organised ICAR sponsored short course for 10 days on the theme “Technology smart agricultural interventions for doubling framers’ income and entrepreneurship development in NEH region: strategies and approaches” was held from January 29 to February 7.  

With the objective to disseminate knowledge and framing of strategies for enhancing agricultural productivity and entrepreneurship development in the Northeast, the course was framed and conducted to address various opportunities and challenges of agricultural sector in the northeast, stated a press release received here. 

Dr Mahak Singh, scientist and course coordinator, informed that the event elaborately covered diverse topics which were of immense importance in agricultural sector like agri-entrepreneurship, organic spice production, agroforestry systems for climate change mitigation and income augmentation, commercial horticulture, quality seed production, soil health management, livestock nutrition, advances in livestock farming, canopy management, post-harvest handling and value addition, unique bovine species of Mithun and many more. 

Altogether 35 lecturers were delivered though physical and online mode by scientists from different ICAR institutes across the country such as ICAR-IARI, New Delhi, ICAR-NBPGR, ICAR-NRC on Mithun, ICAR- IVRI, Izatnagar, ICAR-CSSRI, RRS, Lucknow, ICAR-CCRI RRC, Biswanath Chariali, CAU, and ICAR research complex for NEH region, Umiam. 

Total of 15 participants from Nagaland, Meghalaya, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Chhattisgarh had participated. Furthermore, field visit to Mithun farm, ICAR Nagaland Centre farm, Khonoma Village, Moava village were organised to provide the participants with practical insights into agriculture and allied practices and innovations. 

The event was concluded with release of training manual and participation certificates in presence of Dr. Girish Patil, Director, NRC on Mithun, Dr I Shakuntala, Dean, college of veterinary sciences and animal husbandry, Jalukie and Dr H Kalita, Head of regional centre, ICAR Nagaland centre.
