Health Minister holds emergency meeting on Dengue cases in Mon

MON, AUGUST 22 (MExN): Nagaland Minister for Health & Family Welfare, Paiwang Konyak convened an emergency meeting with the Medical Department Mon on August 21 at the Conference Hall of the District Hospital Mon to discuss the recent surge of clinically diagnosed dengue like illness occurring in the district. 

The meeting was attended by the Chief Medical Officer Mon, Dr Vezokholu Theyo; Medical Superintendent of District Hospital Mon, Dr Mereninla Senlem; Deputy Commissioner, Mon,  Ajit Kumar (IAS); Konyak Union President, Tingthok Konyak; officers of the CMO office; and doctors of District Hospital Mon. 

The Medical Superintendent, Dr Mereninla Senlem gave a brief report on the total number of cases tested and treated at the District Hospital. Till date, a total 413 cases were tested for Dengue, out of which 65 were reported positive. 

The Minister, keeping in view the high patient turnover at the facility, asked the department for the specific list of requirements that are needed at the moment for management of the dengue crisis. The Minister also informed the department that the administration, police and civil societies would discuss the steps to be taken up for awareness on sanitation and cleanliness in order to prevent and control Dengue.

According to DPRO Mon, the Minister sought the support of the Assam Rifles, Red Cross, civil societies: KU, KNSK, KSU to usher assistance to the medical department in handling the situation.

Keeping aside the usual shortage of manpower at the District Hospital, Mon, the department provided the list of requirements for the emergency outbreak management, which included doctors, nurses, medicines, Complete Blood Count (CBC) machine and test kits.

The Minister also urged civil societies to promote the practice of blood donation to ensure the availability of adequate blood storage. During the discussion, the Doctors and nurses highlighted the shortage of manpower, equipment and medicine. The Minister took note of the requirements and gave assurance for deployment of doctors and nurses and ensure the availability of required medicine. 

After the district Hospital visit, Konyak also conducted a review cum consultative meeting with the District Administration, Police, Medical Staffs, HoDs, and Presidents of the KU, KNSK and KSU in the Deputy Commissioner Conference Hall. Apart from this, discussions were also held with regard to road condition, monsoon preparedness, law & order and the initiative of the war against drugs.

In regard to war against drug, the Minister reminded the members of the pledge administered on August 15 and urged to work together in achieving the pledge. 

He requested the district administration, defence and NGOs to coordinate with one another before conducting checking so that the same instances like in Tizit and Wokha does occur. 

Further the Minister pointed out that any government employees under the influence of illicit substance should be given three-month time to rehabilitate themselves while borders should be properly scrutinized, and rehabilitation centres should be built.
