HCBA to continue advocating for separate High Court for Nagaland

The High Court Bar Association (HCBA) has decided to continue advocating for the establishment of a separate High Court for Nagaland.

During its general body meeting held at Bar Room of the Gauhati High Court, Kohima Bench today, the association said it will take up the issue with the State as well as the Union Government.

It may be noted that the State of Nagaland does not have its own High Court and has been under the jurisdiction of Gauhati High Court with a Permanent Bench in Kohima. With persistent demand for separate High Court for Nagaland from various stakeholders, the members endorsed the apex Bar, Nagaland Bar Association take up the matter as a serious issue. 

“We will coordinate with them and decide on the further course of action,” the meeting resolved. 

Earlier this year in February, the Department-related Parliamentary Standing Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice in its 141st report titled, ‘Judicial Infrastructure in the North-Eastern States of India’ noted Nagaland does not have its own High Court and has been under the jurisdiction of Gauhati HC since 1963.

Accordingly, it held that there was merit in the demand for a separate High Court by the State of Nagaland.

Meanwhile, apart from other resolutions, the house also resolved to unanimously support the stand of the Kohima Bar Association and condemned the alleged “illicit nexus” between certain lawyers and police personnel with a cautioned its members from indulging in unethical conducts. 

The HCBA further resolved to condemn such practices through the media.

The general body also resolved to hold a coordination meeting with the High Court Registry to foster better working relationship between the Bar and the Registry. During the meeting, TB Jamir exhorted the gathering and the presidential speech was presented by CT Jamir, Senior Advocate, President HCBA. 

E Thiba Phom Joint Secretary gave the annual report and Property Committee report was presented by Pfosekho Pfotte, Property Secretary and Senior Government Advocate K Angami gave the audit report.
