The Sangtam Union Kohima (SUK) today celebrated its Golden Jubilee-cum-Mungmung festival at Naga Heritage Village, Kisama with much pomp and traditional gaiety under the theme “Growing together in unity.”
Gracing the occasion as the special guest, Nagaland Health & Family Welfare Minister, S Pangnyu Phom complimented SUK for attaining 50 glorious years and wished them a bright and successful future endeavour.
Saluting the pioneers for establishing SUK in 1972, the minister said that their farsightedness approach has enabled the Sangtam community to occupy a healthy growth today in every walk of life.
Stating that their vision and dream (Pioneers) have translated into deed by producing many officers, intellectuals and social reformers today, the minister urged upon the Sangtam community to carry forward the good legacy in letter and spirit beyond borders without ism.
The minister also called upon the Sangtam community to have competitive spirit to excel in various fields.
Stressing on the need to do way with backward mentality, he maintained that one can emerge victorious through hard work and dedication.
Also describing Sangtam as one of the torch bearers of eastern Nagas, he called upon them to have better understanding and unity for all round development.
Stating that “we are divided by demarcation but united in habits, thoughts, and daily practices in our life,” he said “We all need to ponder and pledge in building a robust relationship amongst each tribe and our people.” Also asking the people to love and live as one family, he said “I foresee a great revolution and a great change in our Sangtam land.”
Later, Pangnyu released SUK golden jubilee souvenir.
Nagaland’s soil & water conservation and geology & mining minister V. Kashiho Sangtam, MLA Muthingnyiiba Sangtam and Eastern Nagaland People’s Union Kohima president N.Toshi Chang also spoke on the occasion.
Earlier, welcome address was delivered by L.T. Sangtam, convenor Golden Jubilee Planning Committee.
Albert Jingrii and Achumla Jinglarii presented a special song entitled “Oh Mungmung.” M T Muthing pronounced Mungmung blessings while K. Api, Associate Pastor, Sangtam Baptist Lithro Kohima led a special prayer. The celebration was also marked by cultural extravaganza and jubilee/Mungmung feast.
Mentionably, Mungmung is the premier festival of Sangtam Nagas. It is celebrated for six days in the first week of September every year.
Later, SUK president T Lemli acknowledged the contribution and invaluable service of each and every individual towards the grand celebration of the golden jubilee-cum-Mungmung festival.
