Correspondent SHILLONG, JUL 25: Union Home minister Amit Shah on Saturday said that the NDA government at the Centre is keen on resolving the boundary disputes among the North Eastern states and making the region peaceful and developed.
Shah also expressed optimism that the region’s contribution to the GDP will exceed 20 per cent.
“The (Narendra) Modi government is moving ahead in the Northeast by giving importance to three things – to resolving all disputes of the Northeast and making it a peaceful region, to preserve and promote the languages, culture and create awareness about it across the whole of India and thirdly, by making the Northeast a developed region and bring its GDP contribution back to the pre-Independence level,” Shah said.
With the collective efforts of all concerned, the goal will be achieved in a few years, said Shah, who is on a two-day visit to the state from Saturday to inaugurate developmental projects.
“A day will come when this region’s contribution to GDP will exceed 20 per cent, there will be no trace of poverty, unemployment and unrest,” he said.
Amit Shah also met with the chief ministers, chief secretaries and directors general of police of the North Eastern States here and discussed several issues of importance pertaining to the region, including security, tourism and settling of the inter-state boundary issues.
The three hour long meeting was held at the State Convention Centre behind closed doors.
Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh said the emphasis of the meeting was to build a cordial relationship between the different states and work together in a coordinated manner.
Tripura chief minister Biplab Deb informed the waiting media persons that discussions were held on the internal security of the region. He said initiative is being taken to make North East drugs free by 2022; moreover proposals have been made to promote the region as a tourism circuit. Moreover, discussions were also held on boundary disputes, the international border and other issues, Deb informed.
“Deeply appreciate his concern and commitment towards all round development of the North Eastern Region,” Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio tweeted.
NE state capitals to be linked by 2024
The Home minister said that the North Eastern region would be the India’s growth destination and all the state capitals of the region would be connected by air and railway network by 2023-24.
Noting that connectivity in the North East had been accorded prime importance by Prime Minister Narendra Modi ever since the BJP came to power in 2014, Shah said, “It will be our endeavor to connect all the State capitals in the region through railways and airways and alongside road connectivity will also be strengthened and transportation facilitated”.
“North East is one region in the country, where connectivity is of much importance, without which it difficult to bring development in the region,” Shah said.
