Staff Reporter DIMAPUR, JUL 26 (NPN) : Aboi District Demand Committee (ADDC) has urged the State government to declare Aboi as a district on August 15. Aboi currently falls under Mon district.
Addressing a press conference at Hotel Acacia here on Sunday, committee’s convener Manpon Changkap said they had on numerous occasions apprised the government of the demand for district headquarters at Aboi.
He claimed that the committee’s demand for Aboi as separate district had started in 2008 and the issue was discussed by the State cabinet on November 28, 2011, along with Noklak, for which also there was a demand for separate district.
He pointed out that while Noklak was declared a separate district subsequently, similar demand for Aboi was ignored even though Noklak had only two Assembly constituencies (ACs), while Aboi had four. He clarified that he was not comparing, but merely pointed out the fact.
Mentioning that the primary reason for the demand to make Aboi separate district was for administrative convenience and economic development, Changkap claimed that during the last meeting in January, chief minister Neiphiu Rio had responded positively to their demands and acknowledged their problems.
Asked whether Aboi fulfilled all the criteria for a separate district, he pointed that out of a total 2,60,000 Konyak population, Aboi and Tobu had around 1,20,000, maintaining that the committee was demanding separate district comprising the two with headquarter at Aboi.
Former Lok Sabha member and former ADDC convener Wangyuh Konyak claimed that Aboi, which was earlier known as Champang, was one of the oldest towns in the state.
Mentioning that Mon had nine constituencies with only one deputy commissioner (DC) and one superintendent of police (SP), he observed that it was very difficult to carry out developmental activities and maintain law and order situation. He added the general public also faced inconveniences in getting their ST certificates.
Further, claiming that ADDC had also received no objection certificate (NOC) from Konyak Union (KU) vis-à-vis its demand for making Aboi a separate district, he said the committee had also received support from different tribes like Chang, Khiamniungan, Yimchunger, Phom and Sangtam and Eastern Naga People’s Organisation.
He said it was unanimously decided that there would be only one Konyak Union, even after Aboi was made a separate district.
Sharing a brief history of Aboi, Wangnyuh said it was established in 1955 as a base superintendent and later upgraded to circle office in 1958. He mentioned that it was subsequently upgraded to extra assistant commissioner’s office on January 26, 1978 and then into additional deputy commissioner headquarters on December 8, 1997.
ADDC co-convener Manlem Konyak, ADDC member and BJP’s Aboi unit president Ashu Konyak and ADDC press secretary Alang were also present on the occasion.
