Governor lauds eco-tourism initiatives

DIMAPUR, November 19: Nagaland and Assam governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi and wife Prem Mukhi visited Khonoma village on Thursday.

In a press release, PRO to Governor informed that during an interaction with the people of Khonoma village, the governor was briefed on the transition of Khonoma (the first green village in India), from logging and hunting community to a nature conservation community.

As eco-tourism village, the responsibilities upheld by different community groups in the village were highlighted.

In his short speech, the governor stated that through a book, he came to know about the battles fought by the Khonoma people against the British and securing victory against them with “outdated weapons”.

In this regard, he described them as “bold, courageous and adventurous” and expressed happiness that after assuming office of Nagaland governor, Khonoma was the first village he had visited. He said that he had the highest regard for Khonoma people.

Mukhi also appreciated the eco-tourism initiatives taken by the village and assured that he would take up the matter on improvement of road conditions with the government for better tourism experience.

Meanwhile, Khonoma Nature Conservation and Tragopan Sanctuary (KNCTS) chairman, Kezhaseria Meyase gave a short speech on KNCTS, Ecotourism Management Committee (ETMC) chairman, Nikedolie Hiekha spoke on eco-tourism initiatives in the village while wild life warden Dimapur, Tokaho gave a PowerPoint presentation on various works done by the forest department in the village
