DIMAPUR, JULY 9 (MExN): Governor of Nagaland, La Ganesan on Saturday inaugurated the Indian Intraocular Implant & Refractive Surgery Convention, India (IIRSI) at Hotel ITC, Chola, Chennai.
According to a press communiqué from PRO, Raj Bhavan, the Governor who was the chief guest apprised the doctors attended from across India that this 41st IIRSI convention creates a platform for interaction with respect to the development of new diagnostic and treatment modalities in Ophthalmology through experiences from the globe.
He said Southern India especially Tamil Nadu has always been a forerunner in healthcare particularly in Ophthalmology and hosts many of the premier eye institutes from where aspiring Ophthalmologists embedded with skills and advanced technology pass out and serve in different parts of the country.
The Governor stated that there is a huge prevalence of eye disorders in India. He opined that India has an estimated 12 million blind people and additional 450 million people who required vision correction, according to the WHO.
Emphasizing that over the years IIRSI has made the seasons relating to cornea/vision more interesting by making them interactive and audience participative, the Governor observed that live surgery show seems to be a very interesting part of the conference and offers an opportunity to see the usage of the best equipments, and surgical techniques by experienced surgeons. Wet Lab enables the aspirants for hands –on experiences with novel surgical techniques, he added.
Elucidating on the contributions of Secretary General, IIRS, Prof Amar Agrawal, who was the first Indian & Asian to be elected as President of the International Society of Refractive Surgery/American Academy of Ophthalmology 2013-14, the Governor expressed appreciation to Agrawal and his team for their yeomen service to the society by providing numerous free surgeries to the needy.
During the function, the Governor also congratulated all the dignitaries and delegates who were honored for their marvelous contribution to Ophthalmology.
He also espoused hope that the upcoming generation of health professionals will strive to bring much recognition, for the good health of humanity as well as bring honour to the nation. He added that these advances are definitely the outcome of a lot of research and knowledge and understanding. He further said that this conference is one of the instrumental factors in the development of novel methods for the restoration of vision and management of chronic eye complications.
Later, the Governor handed over citations to both the International and National awardees. International awardees include UK, Vietnam, Switzerland, USA, Canada, Brazil, Israel, Philippines, Argentina, Dubai and Russia. Indian awardees were included Delhi, Telangana, Mumbai and Punjab.
Others who addressed the event include AIOS president, Dr Harbansh Lal; Scientific Committee chairman-AIOS, Dr Namrata Sharma and secretary general, IIRSI, Prof Amar Agarwal. Besides, the welcome was pronounced by the IIRSI president, Dr Ragini Parekh and vote of thanks was delivered by Dr Rohit Om Parkash.
