Nagaland Board of School Education (NBSE) chairperson Asano Sekhose today said that the NEP 2020 emphasised building a strong foundation for each learner in order to redefine the educational landscape.

The Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) principles should be enforced by every teacher to ensure children understand the basics with clarity, she said while addressing the State Level Teachers’ Day celebration here today at NBCC Convention Hall in the presence of  Nagaland’s school education & SCERT advisor Dr Kekhrielhoulie Yhome.

“We need to promote a school system where every child feels acknowledged and valued,” she said adding that  NEP 2020 envisions competency based-teaching and assessments as a key tool to achieve the goals of a more holistic, skill-based education system that prepares students for the 21st century.

As we shift our focus to Competency Based Teaching and Assessment, teachers should have better understanding of the students’ needs and challenges and provide the time needed for the learner to acquire and demonstrate the expected competencies, she said adding “Every child is unique and capable of learning. Therefore, the abilities of the child should be nurtured in various ways.”

Realising that each child is unique, teachers should adopt instructional practices that support personalised learning paths to develop the abilities and skills of the child, she said adding “Every teacher should measure/assess students learning levels and adopt teaching strategies to address identified weaknesses.”

For effective implementation of Competency Based Education (CBE), teachers need to be regularly updated on their skills and knowledge.

Stating that continuous Professional Development (CDP) has become a requirement for all the teachers, the NBSE chairperson called upon the heads and school management leaders to encourage the professional growth of the teachers.

Further, Sekhose called upon the teachers to rededicate themselves to the cause of imparting meaningful education.

“Teachers are the backbone of any institution. You are the role model for the students,” she said.
