Several houses were gutted by a fire in Dimapur which broke out in the early hours of September 11, rendering 12 families homeless. The incident reportedly occurred at around 12:00-12:30 AM at a private saw mill in Island colony, Dimapur located near the Assam-Nagaland border.
Responding to the disaster, five fire tenders were deployed from Central and West fire stations, according to officials. It was suspected that the fire might have originated from a short-circuit in one of the houses (kutcha) when the tenants were asleep. Fortunately, the fire was contained before it spread to the other nearby buildings as an FSSAI warehouse was located next to the mill, separated by a wall.
Approximately Rs 7 lakhs of personal belongings were destroyed in the inferno with no casualties being reported.
In the aftermath of the incident, members of Island colony council stated that the victims would be housed in a temporary shelter nearby. In addition, rice and other basic needs have been distributed to them, they mentioned. Besides the workers at the saw mill, several of the tenants were daily wage labourers.
